The Plainview Pirates, coaches and student-athletes, were honored with a special presentation at the home volleyball games on Thursday, Sept. 12 – the presentation of the “Buckle Up, Phone Down” Cup Class D trophy.
Former Plainview educator and head football coach, and now Nebraska School Activities Association Associate Director, Jeff Johnson, was present to hand over the Cup trophy to the student body and administration.
The Pirates welcomed the Cardinals of South Sioux City to the home gym on Tuesday, Sept. 3 and the Cardinals took the five set victory with them.
Coach Kim Miller commented “This was a tough one, but one that we need to learn from. The team is working hard, we just have to remember to compete for every point, and during every rep. We will find that consistency.”

The Nebraska Grand Chapter 2024 officers, Order of the Eastern Star, were the guests at the Area 7 Visitation hosted by Beulah Chapter #40, Norfolk; Mt. Vernon Chapter #84, Plainview; Wayne Chapter #194, Wayne; and Laura Chapter #301, South Sioux City.
The meeting was held Saturday, September 7th at the Plainview Congregational Church with 70 members in attendance.
The staff, administration and families at the Plainview Manor celebrated Grandparents Day last week. More than 75 were reported to attend the event and share time with their loved ones. A meal was provided by the Manor, and donations were received from various local sponsors for raffle and door prizes to give away.
The Plainview Board of Education has planned a special meeting for the proposed adoption of the 2024-25 budget this year.
On Wednesday, Sept. 18, the Board will gather at the high school media center at 5 p.m. to open a series of meetings, over a scheduled time of just 15 minutes, to discuss and review the proposed budget, tax request and then have a special meeting with the intent to pass the budget and tax request.
The Pierce County 4-H Shooting Club hosted its first-ever official competition this past weekend on Saturday, Sept. 7 just south of Plainview.
The event was held at the Thomsen farm, owned by Gene and Velma Thomsen, longtime shooting club instructors and sponsors – and conducted with a host of volunteers, including both the Thomsen’s children, now fully grown with kids of their own, David Thomsen and Kristi Anderson.

Three Plainview Educators Rising members and adviser Ronita Jacobsen joined ESUs 6 and 9 in their Pilot Program and Student Kickoff for Course I Introduction to Teaching as a Profession.
The kickoff was held in Milford at Southeast Community College in the Welsh Center with close to 100 students attending from almost 20 schools. Members attending from Plainview were senior Shayla Jacobsen and juniors Trindan Ziems and Mallory Mauer. Member Emma Sauser was marching with the band at the state fair and unable to attend that day.
The Plainview Pirates football team kicked off its season on Friday, Aug. 30 with a contest against the Pender Pendragons in Pender.
After a successful 2023 season which featured an undefeated regular season, the Pirates entered the 2024 season with a tough week one opponent in the Pendragons, who finished the 2023 season with a regular season record of 5-3.
Plainview FCCLA will host a community blood drive with the American Red Cross on Wednesday, September 18, from 9 am–3 pm at Plainview High School Tartan Gym.

Terry Makelin has made his arrival to the area as the new Pastor for the Trinity Lutheran Church in Foster, as well as the Golgotha Lutheran Church in Wausa.
15 years ago, Makelin was invested in one of his many careers prior to ministry. He had worked at a steel mill, dabbled in insurance, and was even involved in the safety of h a z a r d o u s waste security at a hospital in Norfolk.
The brand new Plainview Pirate Marching band put their skills from band camp to work this past Monday, marching
down the main road at the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island. This year the band boasts about 30 members,
and is again under the direction of instructor Wynter Fulsaas.
Members of the Pierce County Shooting Sports (PCSS) 4-H club delivered outstanding performances in the American Legion postal match held last January, earning the top spot as the best sporter team in Nebraska.
The team, consisting of Sara Thomsen, Cayden Holan, Brandon Thomsen, Konnar Jones,
and Keegan Holan, showcased remarkable skill and teamwork throughout the competition.
The Plainview FCCLA Chapter held their annual kick-off on August 15th at 6:00 p.m. with this year’s theme “If You Feel It Chase It”.
Following a supper provided by the officers, a slide show featuring last year’s events was viewed.

Multiple Plainview golfers represented the Plainview Country Club at the annual North Four Tee tournament on Saturday, Aug. 10. In the tournament, golfers from Plainview faced off against competitors from Atkinson, Summerland, and Battle Creek.
“Nebraska HS Football” has just released its
preseason top ten rankings for all NSAA classifications
for the 2024 NSAA High School Football
season, and among the top 10 in Class D-1 were the
Plainview Pirates, who enter the 2024 season as
the number six team in class D-1.
A Plainview couple, Danielle and John Steinkraus, is putting the finishing touches on what’s soon-to-be the newest locally owned business in town, the 3 Brother’s Car Wash. The car wash is named after the couple's three children.
