The 2024 Knox County Scrap Tire Collection was considered a success with more than 135 tons of tires were collected at the Center County Shed on June 19.
Deputy Knox County Clerk, Krista Nix, said the grant approved from the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy was for the collection of up to 150 tons with the low bid to Butler County Landfill where the scrap tires are ground and used to cover the landfill at David City. Nix said the 2025 grant process will begin later this week and an application will be submitted for Knox County.

The Crofton 12-and-Under girls softball team will be the top seed at the 2024 Nebraska Fast Pitch State Championships in Hastings this weekend, June 28-30. The Crofton girls will start their tournament on Friday, June 28 at 3:30 p.m. against the winner of the Beatrice Pumas 11U and the WDSA 12U teams that will play at 11 a.m.
If they win the second game will be on Saturday at 2 p.m., then Saturday at 5 p.m. and the championship games starting on Sunday, June 30 at 11 a.m. Twenty-five other teams have staffed the tournament, with a number of bunny-brackets for all but six of the teams, Crofton included.
The Crofton chapter of the Sons of the American Legion have given out half their calendar awards so far this season - with six months of winners to go. At left, second time winner and supporter of the Crofton Sons of the American Legion, Dick Wortmann, won the gun calendar gun for June 2024.

The Eighth Annual Brandon Gerdes Memorial Shoot and Swing Outing was held on Saturday June 8, 2024, at The Northeast Nebraska Shooting Association and the Pierce Community Golf Course.
“Shooting and golfing were two of Brandon’s favorite activities and it is great to get to compete in both in one day! We are grateful for all those who participated in making this another successful event,” said organizers.

The Nebraska Agricultural Educators' Association annual awards banquet was held June 5, 2024 at the Nebraska Career Education Conference in Kearney. Mrs. Stephanie Mann was honored as the Golden Owl state winner and named Nebraska Agricultural Educator of the Year. The Nebraska Golden Owl Award is sponsored by the Nebraska Agriculture Educators Association, the Nebraska FFA Foundation, and Nationwide.
The Crofton Warriors 12U softball team earned first place at their district tournament in Crofton that took place from Friday, June 7 through Sunday, June 9. The Warriors earned the oneseed in the tournament and proved why they deserved it with their dominant play throughout the three-day, double-elimination tournament.

Crofton Volunteer Fields hosted the USA Softball 12 and Under District Tournament during the weekend of June 7-9 in Crofton. The tournament played host to 24 games, including 13 teams from northeast Nebraska. The tournament was a testament to youth sports and offering kids a safe and fun learning environment.
Teams included Atkinson, Battle Creek, Creighton, Crofton, Elgin, Hartington, Norfolk Quakes, O’Neill, Osmond, Pierce, Ponca, Tilden, and Wakefield. The Crofton team took wins over Atkinson, Creighton, O’Neill and finally Tilden in the championship game to claim their title.
During the two-day Rocket Workshop, 14 4-H members completed a STEM Rocket to exhibit at the Knox County Fair later this summer. Julie Schultz, lead 4-H Extension Educator in Pierce and Wayne Counties led this workshop, teaching the students from start to finish on how to construct their rockets!
Following the workshop, the youth will launch off their rockets three times and finish up their project by writing a report over the entire process! Julie Schultz lead this workshop for the youth. Be sure to look out for these rockets in the 4-H building during the Knox County Fair.
In less than 60 days hundreds of running, biking, kayaking and sporting enthusiasts will again descend on Crofton for the 2024 Crofton Dam Race. This year’s event will be held on July 27, for athletes of all age, style and shape to “Choose your adventure between three events: a sprint triathlon with kayaking instead of swimming, a half marathon or 12-mile bike race.”
A majority of the event takes place along the southern shores of the Lewis & Clark Lake and state recreation area, in the park, through the waters along the shoreline and then on the scenic roadways back to Crofton proper. Athletes and race-goers can pick and choose between a number of options like a 12 mile bike route, 5K run, 1.5 mile kayak route or half marathon – or any number of options between triathlon or individual races, and also with team competitions.
The event officially begins on Friday, July 26 with registration closing at 5 p.m. – a spaghetti feed for races from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.; and a triathlon and races for kids at the Crofton Swimming Pool.
Registrants will then pick up their packets for the next days race. Saturday the half marathon kicks things off at 7 a.m., with the welcome from the race committee at 7:30 a.m. Around 8 a.m. the triathlon starts with the kayak-leg of the race, and the individual bikers and triathlon bikers can take off around 9 a.m.
The downtown area will open at 10:30 a.m. for food, drinks and entertainment for racers and onlookers alike as the finishers begin to trickle into town from the north. Final awards are scheduled for around 12:30 p.m. – or 15 minutes after the final racer crosses the finish line. Medals and the “Spirit of the Jorts” annual award will be given. Crofton Volunteer Fields’ teams played well at home and on the road throughout May 27 through June 2. The softball teams hit the road to Hartington and Verdigre, while the baseball. Next week will be another busy one. While the baseball season continues, the softball teams (10s, 12s, 14s, 18s) will head to districts.

The Legion Juniors club gathered a trio of big wins last week, winning 9-1 on Tuesday, May 28 over South Sioux City, and getting another 9-1 win over Lakeview Juniors the following night, Wednesday, May 29. Grant Schieffer tied 35th out of 98 golfers at the 2024 State NSAA Golf Championships shooting an 86 at the Elks Country Club in Columbus on Wednesday, May 22.
The State Golf Championships took place originally on Tuesday, May 21 and Wednesday, May 22. Though the weather canceled the 18-hole play on Tuesday causing the meet to be just 18 holes on Wednesday instead of the 36 that is usually played for the State Tournament...

Crofton’s American Legion Tucker-Brown-Everton Post #128 gathered multiple times in the community and at surrounding cemeteries on Monday, May 27 for a number of services marking Memorial Day.
The group started their travels at 8:30 a.m. at the Crofton City Cemetery, then onto the Beaver Creek Cemetery, Aten Cemetery, Frankfort Cemetery, Beaver View Cemetery, St. Rose of Lima Cemetery and St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Constance. The group finished their yearly tour with a program at the City Auditorium, with honor guard and flags in the south park.

High school students from Crofton High School participated in hands-on activities to evaluate the water quality of the Bow Creek on Wednesday, May 8th thanks to the help of Curt Arens and Paul Arens. Students evaluated several aspects of West Bow Creek southwest of Crofton, looking at E.coli levels and indicator species of fish and invertebrates. Get the full story in this week's Journal!
The owners of the Historic Argo Hotel in Crofton will be celebrating their first anniversary of ownership this weekend, Sunday, May 26 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The community is invited for the afternoon of “beverages, Tapas, raffle, live music and tours” of the hotel.
