Have you ever tried quilting before? The Textiles class at Crofton High School is making quilts for their last class project.
The students say that making their own quilts makes them feel more accomplished. In addition, those techniques will help students later if they want to create another quilt.
Mrs. Jonelle Thoene has fun teaching the students how to make quilts. She is looking forward to seeing the different quilts come together. Each student shows so much personality that makes each quilt his or her own.
Senior Piper Dather made her quilt with a design called nomad, which is very expert. She wanted to challenge herself and show what she could do with a sewing machine. Dather is making this quilt for her mom. Dather likes how the colors she picked are laid out in the patterns. Dather's quilt has light and dark greens, white, and some light browns. Looking at her quilt, many people can't wait to see how it will turn out.
Senior Kaden Acuff is doing a triangle design quilt. Acuff is making her quilt more colorful. The most challenging part of her quilt is cutting her fabric straight. When Acuff first made it, she thought the quilt would look wrong at the end, but it turning out nicely.
Junior Caitlin Guenther's quilt is made from her dad's t-shirts from when he was younger.
Guenther even decided to add all her family members' names to her quilt. Guenther wanted to make it memorable for her family. Overall, Guenther said, "I like making my quilt. It is really fun."
Sophomore Cassie Allen is making a nine-patch quilt. Cassie wants her colors spread around in her quilt. Cassie wants to get better at cutting her fabric. Her quilt has many different designs and most colors are very light.
Sophomore Sammie Allen's design is solid patches of four. Sammie likes the outdoors and likes having natural colors. When she made her quilt, she printed images of different pictures of her dogs on fabric to include in her quilt.
Sophomore Lexi Wiebelhaus ‘s quilt has eight-inch blocks with some pinks, blues, and striped blocks. When Wieblehaus went to Walmart, she picked designs she liked, and they blended just right with the quilt she was making. Wiebelhaus likes how fun it is making quilts and it keeps her very busy in class.
Senior Sean Segovia made his quilt out of eight patch squares. Segovia’s quilt is dedicated to Nickelodeon, and he drew a minion on one of his blocks since he couldn’t get another piece of fabric that would match the others. Segovia likes his quilt because it involves the characters he watches on TV.
Senior Kendall Theone has a Husker quilt. Theone used his favorite colors and teams on the quilt. His quilt has different patterns throughout, which makes it very special to him. He is excited to get it done so he can take it home and show his family the accomplishments he had made.
Overall the students like making their own quits and showing what they accomplished over time.
They all enjoy making them and can't wait to put them to good use. Most students weren't big fans of how many mistakes they made along the way, but they learned to push through it.
Another important life lesson to learn along with all the quilting skills they have acquired.
