Prior to the Crofton City Council meeting on Monday evening, Wanda Peterson was honored by Mayor Bob Evans with the “Key to the City” for her quick action that stopped a fire in the City Auditorium last week.
The special ceremony was attended by friends, family, neighbors, City officials and the like with refreshments served after the presentation. From last week’s story:
“On a routine walk through the city auditorium, Wanda Peterson stumbled upon an extension cord connected to a space heater, emitting smoke and flames on the auditorium kitchen floor.
Undeterred by the danger, she acted swiftly, seeking help and successfully unplugging the cord from the electrical outlet. The flames were successfully doused with water preventing the spread of the fire.
The incident occurred in early afternoon January 24, 2024, and Peterson's actions have been credited with preventing what could have been a devastating fire, sparing the city auditorium and surrounding areas from potential destruction. "The safety of our residents is paramount, and Wanda Peterson demonstrated exceptional courage and civic responsibility," said Mayor Bob Evans. "Her quick actions undoubtedly prevented a potential disaster, and we are immensely grateful for her vigilance and dedication to our community."
Wanda Peterson, a familiar face in the community known for her regular walks and friendly demeanor, downplayed her heroic actions. "I just did what anyone else would have done. I love this city, and I'm thankful I could help keep it safe," she remarked modestly.
