The City of Crofton, the Crofton Police Department, and the Mayor of Crofton were notified on June 9 by correspondence that the community had been awarded funding from the Crime Commission Funding Panel.
The total to be received totals $93,023 – and was originally written for a second officer and new communication equipment for the Crofton Police Department by Chief John Carter, and awarded to the community for the 2023-2024 grant period.
There are a number of contingencies that must be completed, and Chief Carter said on Monday that he will have those requirements completed by this Friday, allowing for the full funding this cycle, and that he hopes for similar or additional funding in the next cycle for 2024-2025 as well.
The Federal Government provided $1.61 million to the State of Nebraska to help fund the “Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant” (JAG), and the funds are to be distributed over a two year period, July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2025.
There is no match required, but the City’s budget for the police department will count toward “sustainability” and applicants were encouraged to have budgets, so the city’s current police department was beneficial to the awarding of the funds.
Announcement was made late last week, and City Council member Jason Wauvrnek commented at the Council meeting on Monday that he appreciated the efforts of Chief Carter on behalf of the city.
