Early last Tuesday morning before the sun was up, I drove out to the Skrdla Land and Cattle ranch to learn about weaning beef calves.
About a mile before I drove onto the place, I heard calves bawling. It was a constant sound, an almost annoying sound for someone like me who grew up in small town America.
At first I thought the critters were in distress. When I drove onto the feed yard where Chris Skrdla and his dad Joe, who together own and operate the farm/ranch, I learned a different story.
