The West Holt girls golf team continued their success this past week when the squad traveled to Albion for the Boone Central-Newman Grove invite.
The invite was full of talent, with 12 teams competing, including Columbus Scotus Catholic, Wayne and O’Neill.
West Holt entered the day with a full week of practice under their belts, having not competed in a meet in nearly a week.
The weather played into factor nicely for the field, as the sun was out with nothing more than a five mile-per-hour breeze in play to help cool the contestants as they walked the long par-38 course.
This season, the Huskies have had some trouble on the front nine in tournaments, and that pattern would continue at this invite.
Leading the way for the Huskies on the front nine would be freshmen Daleni Knust and Brinley Kerkman, who would enter the turn with a 48 and 51, followed by Brooklynn Butterfield with a 53 and Abby Mathis and Catarina Ketteler tied with a 54 for team score of 206 entering the back nine.
The girls were able to bounce back very well on the back nine, however, with all four of the top scorers dropping strokes. Kerkman came in with a personal best of a two-over-par 40, Knust would shoot a solid four-over 42, Mathis with 46 and Ketteler with a 51 for a back-nine team score of 179, improving by 27 strokes as a team.
With their impressive back-nine performance, the Huskies were able to not only enter the top three in team-placings but sneak away with the runner-up trophy, edging out Wayne by five strokes to earn the title.
The Huskies came second place only to Scotus Catholic, who dominated the field with an impressive team score of 351.
Individual Husky results as well as team placings are as follows:
Place Name Score
6 Daleni Knust 90
8 Brinley Kerkman 91
19 Abby Mathis 100
24 Catarina Ketteler 105
28 Brooklynn Butterfield 107
Place Team Score
1 Columbus Scotus Catholic 351
2 West Holt 386
3 Wayne 391
4 O’Neill 401
West Holt finished out their week on a rather strange note, with what was supposed to be an 18-hole tournament at Fredricks Peak Golf Course in Valentine. The course offers many challenging greens, wide fairways, and the occasional Mountain Lion.
After nine holes of play, the tournament was forced to come to an end after a Mountain Lion was spotted on the golf course by a trail camera.
Unfortunately, the Huskies were in contention for the first-place plaque but did not have a chance to make a comeback on the back-nine due to the unusual stoppage.
Because of the stoppage of play, West Holt would take home the runner-up trophy as a team. Individual and team results from the meet are as follows:

3 Daleni Knust 43
5 Abby mathis 46
